With more than five decades in elected office, incumbent Jim Costa is losing his footing in an uphill battle against voters seeking a new generation of leadership.
Alexan Balekian joins campaign strategists Dave Gilliard of Gilliard Blanning and Associates, and Anne Hyde Dunsmore of Capital Campaigns, Inc. Both firms have over 100 years of experience in California and have represented thousands of campaigns both in California and nationally.
A Fresno native, Alexan Balekian founded a strategic communications, media, and political consulting firm after retiring from his 24-year award-winning broadcast career that spanned the nation. Covering Capitol Hill politics and news from the D.C. Beltway as the morning anchor in Virginia, Alexan returned to the Central Valley, where he hosted the highly-rated, longest-running one-hour public affairs show in California, "Sunday Morning Matters." Receiving congressional and state recognition from both sides of the aisle, "Sunday Morning Matters" became the go-to platform for elections and candidates. Alexan's fair and balanced approach to media was recently honored with a proclamation by the City of Fresno.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled and honored to have Alexan assist our team in winning this election. He and his family have been friends of mine for years,” said Michael Maher, candidate for Congress in the 21st district. “His expertise in communications, strong relationships with local, state, and national news organizations, as well as his deep ties throughout the Central Valley and within the Armenian community, will ensure that my vision for delivering change and prosperity to the people of the Valley is heard. It’s time for Jim Costa to stop standing in the way of progress and pass the torch. It’s time for a new direction.”
After graduating from Fresno State, Alexan began his journalism career in the sports industry. His first “big get” on TV was an interview with Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith. After returning to the Valley from Texas, Alexan joined KMJ in 2009, stepping into the legendary shoes of Bill Woodward, co-hosting alongside Ray Appleton every morning. He then created the only FM sports show, "No Static Sports." In 2013, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, becoming the Game Day host for the Arizona Cardinals on ESPN radio. In 2017, he transitioned to Virginia, reinventing his career by covering Capitol Hill politics as the morning anchor for the FOX affiliate in Roanoke, Virginia. In 2018, he returned to Fresno, where he and Stefani Booroojian formed the only prime-time Armenian news team in the nation. Together, they won the station's first Emmy for “Best Newscast” in more than two decades.
